I will teach you how to prepare manna bread, soy milk, cheese from seeds, bean steak, meat(less) balls, falafel, hummus, salads, wheatgrass and many more – many made from sprouted foods. 12. Musicians come together for Peace - Nanaimo - Aug 19th
The Nanaimo War Resisters and St Andrews United Church jointly present A Concert for Peace, a collection of classical and contemporary music, on
Sunday, August 19, 2007
at 7:00pm
at St Andrew's Church
on Fitzwilliam Street in Nanaimo.
Headlining this fundraising concert will be Timothy Richard, who is a young Canadian Baritone, currently completing a Bachelor's of Music in Honours Vocal Performance program at the University of Western Ontario under the tutelage of famed baritone Theodore Baerg, and well on his way to becoming established in the world of vocal music. Timothy is also a War Resister who, rather than participate in the Iraq War, came to Nanaimo from the United States in November 2005. While in Nanaimo he became active with the Nanaimo War Resister Support Group as well as a member of the St Andrew's choir. Timothy wanted to give back to the community that supported him during a difficult transition so he collaborated with friends at St Andrew's to present A Concert for Peace as joint fundraiser for them and the Nanaimo War Resister Support Group. Timothy will be joined by Sue Solomon, an award winning soprano who this past April won the Linden Singers Award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, the highest award for a singer in her category; Nicole Lewis, also a soprano and a Global Studies student at Malaspina University College and Saehae Bae, a young and very gifted pianist who was runner up in the BC Provincial piano festival this year and at 14 years old is the accompanist for Nanaimo Youth Choir and Camerata. Yoosun Hwang also known as Christine Bae, organist at St Andrews, will accompany the singers. Tickets for the concert are $10.00 and can be purchased at the door or by phoning Jane Barnum at 758-5983. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the War Resisters and St. Andrew's.
Timothy says "I grew up around music, but I found social activism later in life when, as a member of the US Army National Guard, I was hit with a moral dilemma: Do I do what I know to be right, or participate in the Iraq war and 'go with the flow'? I chose the right thing and I never looked back. A Concert for Peace gives me a great opportunity to combine the two things that I am most passionate about, peace and music."
Concert details:

About the Nanaimo War Resisters
The Nanaimo War Resisters Support Group exists to provide welcome and support to men and women of conscience who have chosen to resist the war in Iraq by fleeing the United States military. We take this stand because we are citizens of a peace loving nation, we oppose war and we are committed to a culture of peace. We believe that Canada has a history of being a haven - and we must support that. The War Resisters Support Group Nanaimo provides emotional and financial support to military men, women and their families who are resisting the war in Iraq. We provide for the basic needs of new arrivals until they have achieved refugee status (or equivalent) or until they have received permission to work - whichever comes first. We also provide funds for legal cases that are related to the War Resisters status in Canada.
About St Andrew's United Church:
St Andrew's United Church holds an honourable place in Nanaimo history. Because of its fine acoustics, it is regularly used by professional choirs, orchestras, and other musical groups in concert. Part of St Andrew's mission is to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to learn of and grow in faith as well as develop a fellowship and bond with the local and global community.
About the performers:
Timothy Richard, Baritone:
Timothy Richard is a Canadian baritone who is becoming an established voice in the world of vocal music. Having performed and taught internationally, Timothy performs music in a variety of languages and styles. Current projects include Carmina Burana, Kindertotenlieder, and numerous other works. He is currently finishing the fourth year of the Bachelor's of Music in Honours Vocal Performance program at the University of Western Ontario, under the tutelage of famed baritone Theodore Baerg. Timothy plans on continuing on to his Masters in music performance, and looks forward to an international performance career.
Saehae Bae, Pianist:
Saehae was born in Yung joo, Korea in 1993 and she began playing piano at the age of 3. She has achieved many awards from piano competitions in Korea. In 2005, she came to Canada with her mom and brother, and has studied piano with Teresa Marusarz-Borek and at Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. She competed in Junior piano at the BC Provincial festival this year and was runner-up. She is 14 years old and is the accompanist for Nanaimo Youth Choir and Camerata Choir. She is currently studying piano with Ingrid Henderson at Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Nicole Lewis, Soprano:
Nicole Lewis was born and raised in London Ontario and started studying music and performing solos at the age of ten. She has sung in various semi-professional choirs and has been active in school choirs as well. Although she spent over 15 years studying vocal music, she enjoys it as a hobby now and sings with the Cantable Choir at Malaspina U.C. and St. Andrew's United Church choir. Nicole is studying languages and Global Studies at Malaspina and hopes to work with new immigrants when she completes her degree.
Sue Solomon, Soprano:
Sue Solomon's performing career began at the age of five on the stage of the McPherson Playhouse in Victoria. In 1988, she obtained her B.Ed in music from UVIC. Her latest teaching assignment includes elementary band and music for over 250 students. Sue has performed with the Victoria Operatic Society, Viva Musica (Kelowna) and a variety of other operatic and musical theatre companies in BC. This past April, she won the Linden Singers Award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, the highest award for a singer in her category. She currently studies with Christine McMahon.
Yoosun Hwang and Peter Kurpita, collaborative pianists will accompany the singers.

14. Symposium: The Performer in a Multicultural Society - Aug 25 & 26th
Puente Theatre Society presents:
Symposium: The Performer in a Multicultural Society
25 & 26 August, 2007
Canadian College of Performing Arts, 1701 Elgin Road Victoria BC
Can multicultural theatre conquer BC's mainstream stages?
During this two-day event, strategies, tools, concepts, and techniques
to promote diversity in theatre will be studied and shared
HIGHLIGHTS:
Workshops & Master Classes:
u Saturday 25 August, 11:15 am to 12:30 pm: African Dance Workshop with Maobong Oku & drummer Yoro Noukussi
u Saturday 25 August, 3:15 to 4:15 pm: Master Class: Blood Memory, with Dr. Iris Bannerman
u Sunday 26 August, 12:00 to 1:00 pm: Master Class: Celebrating Oral Tradition, with Krystal Cook
u Sunday 26 August, 2:00 to 3:00 pm: Voice Workshop, with Bisia Belina
Topics:
u Social Responsibility of the Performer in a Multicultural Society: minority performers seem to be drawn inevitably to topics that cover social issues: integration into the new society, racism, cultural differences, gaining respect for one's culture of birth. Because the stage is a place of power we, the performers, are seen as representatives of whole communities. Challenges and advantages of this situation. Do performers have a choice?
u Education and training of the Performer in a Multicultural Society: are training Institutions doing enough to utilize the cultural diversity available in this country? What is missing? Are we opening up to other forms of making theatre? Are we using/contacting/opening up to teachers, instructors, writers from a variety of cultures?
u Storytelling: fundamental form of performance and communication: a way to ease the performer into the new society and validate his/her culture and experience.
u Blood Memory: by starting with the idea of owning a "blood memory" we can begin to understand our unique ways of communicating to each other via our individual speech and "dialect".
u The significance of First Nations Performers in our Multicultural Society: First Nations' spirit is the blood memory of this country. To connect with it is to connect with the roots of our identity no matter where in the world we come from.
u Multilingualism and translation: inevitably we are using more languages in productions. What problems does this pose for the performer? What is gained and lost in translation?
u A Canadian Performer in Japan: what can we learn from these personal experiences?
u The Victoria experience: what is the situation in our city? What can we learn from others?
u Education and training of directors and artistic directors in a multicultural society. What are the challenges in expanding the horizons of those largely responsible for what/who appears on stage? What can we, as performers, do about it?
To suggest other topics, please e-mail us at puente.theatre@gmail.com.
Saturday 25 August, 5:30 pm: Reception for symposium participants and evening performance audiences. Delicious foods can be purchased from the Victoria Multicultural Women's Catering Coop. There will also be a cash bar.
Performances:
u Chile Con Carne, performed by Romina Miranda; written by Carmen Aguirre, takes an uncompromising look at a Chilean refugee family, through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl. Saturday 25 August 2007 at 6:30 pm.
u Emergence, written and performed by poet Krystal Cook: the journey of a Kwakwaka'wakw woman from the Namgis territory of Alert Bay. She uses movement, mask, sound and spoken word to explore and celebrate the emergence of voice. Saturday 25 August 2007 at 8:00 pm.
u The Adventures of Ali & Ali and the aXes of Evil: a Neworld production, written and performed by Marcus Youssef and Camyar Chai, a biting, extremely funny satire. Sunday 26 August 2007 at 5:30 pm.
Pass full Symposium: $45, students/seniors/un-waged: $25
Ticket single event (two workshops/three performances): $10/each
Auditing pass two Master classes and all plenary meetings and discussions: $10

Dear Colleague:
The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) and the Treaty 8 Tribal Association (T8TA), will host the 15th Annual National Land Claims Research Workshop in Victoria, British Columbia. The workshop will take place October 30 to November 1, 2007 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel located in downtown Victoria. The Workshop will provide opportunities for all participants to share information regarding the specific claims work being undertaken in each region of the country. Attendees will also benefit from a series of thematic and technical presentations, which highlight recent developments in information management, legislative initiatives and case law that directly impact the research and settlement of specific claims.
We hope the focus of this year’s Workshop will be relevant to your work. We have included several small hands-on sessions devoted to information management technologies. Due to anticipated high demand, pre-registration is required to attend these sessions.
Location
The 15th Annual Workshop will be held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, 721 Government Street, Victoria, BC (see pre-registration form for details).
Pre-Registration
In order to plan for an approximate number of Workshop participants, we are asking that you pre-register by September 29, 2007. A copy of the pre-registration form is enclosed. Please indicate whether or not you will be attending the banquet on October 31. Those who would like to attend, but do not work for a First Nation organization or INAC (e.g. consultants, etc.) must pay a $200 registration fee — we will not prorate if people only wish to attend one session or one day.
Hotel & Flight Reservations
A block of rooms at discounted rates of $90 plus tax has been reserved at the Fairmont Empress in Vicotira. Organizations or individuals must reserve their own room(s), and must quote the Reservation ID: GRNLC1. After September 29, 2007 the special rate will no longer be available. All participants attending the Workshop are encouraged to make their own flight and hotel arrangements as soon as possible (see pre-registration form for details).

============================================
